Tackling systemic racism

Tackling systemic racism

Community & Economic Development Systems

A nonprofit organization that focuses on helping communities that have been affected by racism. Their goal is to support local residents, promote strong neighborhood leadership, and make investments that create equal opportunities for everyone, especially in areas impacted by systemic racism.

Brief

We want more organizations to use the Rooted Playbook, especially those ready to take action in neighborhoods impacted by systemic racism. It helps break down complex policy ideas into clear, practical steps for advancing racial equity and financial empowerment. The goal is to make it easier for anyone to understand and apply real solutions in their own community.

The approach

We created the Rooted Playbook as a practical, user-friendly guide that simplifies complex social and financial issues, helping communities understand systemic racism and take action toward racial equity and financial empowerment. By breaking down topics into clear, actionable steps, we empower individuals to drive local change. Rooted’s voice is bold, human, and positive, focusing on Black healing, community, and place-based solutions. The toolkit provides feasible actions to make change possible, highlighting the connection between wealth and opportunity while showcasing vibrant communities through inclusive language and empowering stories.

Results and takeaways

The Playbook has been shared across organizations and neighborhoods, helping people better understand systemic racism and take meaningful steps toward change. It’s now used as a trusted resource for local action and long-term community growth. From this project, I learned how to translate complex social and financial topics into simple, impactful guidance. I also saw how language can empower communities, build trust, and drive real change. You can check the Playbook guide on their web https://www.investstl.org/rooted/
